4 Exciting Offroading Trails Around Bessemer Alabama

Offroading is a fun and adventurous way to spend your weekend. This activity requires you to be attentive and engaged to overcome obstacles and challenges.  

Luckily, there are many offroading trails around Bessemer, Alabama to choose from. The following are just some of our favorites: 

Stoney Lonesome OHV Park  

Stoney Lonesome OHV park is the first public OHV park in Alabama. It has about everything you could ask for including mud, obstacle courses, rock crawling hills and trails for experienced rigs. This park is very large with over 1456 acres, so you will want to take some emergency communication or navigation technology such as a satellite GPS because there is a chance you could get lost.  

If you want to make your trip longer, there are ample accommodations including cabins, housing units, tent areas, RV pavilions, and bathhouses. The park does charge entry and camping fees, so you will want to check their website before planning a trip.  

Talladega National Forest- Road 617 

Talladega National Forest Road 617 is a trail located in the northwest corner of the national forest. It is a shorter trail that is part gravel road and part single lane dirt road. When you take this trail, you will pass through several different types of forest including pine and old-growth hardwood. Keep in mind, this trail can get very muddy when it rains, so you’ll need for 4WD and a decent amount of navigation skills. The entire trail is about 3.5 miles long, and it is mostly straight without many curves. Overall, this is a great trail with excellent scenery and a diverse amount of terrain. 

Talladega National Forest-FR500 

Talladega National Forest Road 500 is a well-managed gravel trail located in the northwest quadrant of the national forest. This trail begins near the city of Heflin and runs a straight course 24 miles to the Duggar mountains near the town Piedmont. It passes through Choccolocco Wildlife Management Area, so you get the opportunity to witness some excellent scenery and wildlife along with many lakes, creeks and beautiful hardwood forests. Plenty of side trails branch off from the main trail, so you can find a more challenging path if you have 4WD. Additionally, the trail leads you to designated camping areas with water hook-ups.  

Morris Mountain ORV Park 

Morris Mountain ORV Park is located about one and a half hours east of Birmingham. The owners, Kris and Randy Morris, created the park because they felt it was difficult to find offroading trails and wanted to create something fun and affordable for the average person. In this park, you can find trails, obstacle courses, canyons, mud pits, and a simple area for camping during weekend trips. Keep in mind, this park is only open on the second and fourth weekends of the month, and they do charge for entry in the park.
